We have been very busy establishing new routines and getting adjusted to a new school year!
In French, we have been reading many French stories. The students' have particularly enjoyed the series 'Frisson L'ecureuil' (Scaredy Squirrel) by Melanie Watt. We played a Jeopardy game about Scaredy Squirrel on the Smart Board. Ask your child to tell you a little bit about Scaredy Squirrel. He is an interesting character!
In English, we have started a program called 'Words Their Way'. The students are working on sound patterns and word sorts. We are looking forward to doing some centre activities when we get our new Ipads!
In Math, we are learning to solve and write math problems. We are currently learning about even and odd numbers and base ten and have played various Math Games such as Tic-Tac-Dix, Grille de 100, and Power of Ten War.
In Science, we are studying Forces. We have been discussing how simple machines make a person's work easier such as using pulleys, wedges, inclined planes and screws.
In Social Studies, we are learning about the people who work in our school and their responsibilities. We will soon be discussing what our responsibilities are as students and what my responsibilities are as a teacher.
Last week, we completed the Terry Fox Run. As part of the planning committee for the run, I was thrilled to see the involvement from family and the generous donations the school received. I will be counting the donations soon and will announce a total on our blog.
Home Reading has started in French and English. There are some concerns about the books being too easy. In grade 2, the students begin to take books home in French. The books should be easy to build confidence and fluency. The English books should be easy as well. I am currently listening to every student read to me in English. They will choose new levels based on their fluency and comprehension as they progress throughout the year. Please send me an e-mail or a note in the agenda if there are any questions regarding Home Reading.
